Iron, Steel, and Aluminium
Forging Ahead in Iron, Steel, and Aluminium
SOHAR provides great access to markets in the Middle East and Indian subcontinent, as well as competitive production costs for iron, steel, and aluminium manufacturers. With manufacturers in SOHAR actively seeking to meet a 12 million tonne shortfall in the Middle East and with demand set to grow to 2 billion tonnes by 2025, steel is one area with real potential for growth.
Our deep-water port allows for raw materials such as iron ore to be easily received, ensuring smoother primary and secondary production processes and attracting the likes of Vale (Brazil), Jindal Shadeed (India), Sohar Aluminum (Canada) and a host of companies from Oman, India, and Turkey. Drawing on low cost raw material suppliers and feeding downstream activities, these companies are at the heart of the metal industry in SOHAR Port. Five new ferrochrome smelters are under construction on the Freezone, and will be accompanied by the biggest rare earth metals plant of its kind outside of China following a US$60 million deal.
