Environmental Specialist

Job objective

The primary aim of the Environmental Specialist is to manage the planned Air Quality Monitoring Network (AQMN) and to support the process for environmental permits.

Duties & responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Within the field of air quality

  • Establishment and operation of an Air Quality Monitoring Network (AQMN) for SOHAR Port and Freezone
  • Promote cooperation between SOHAR, MECA and tenants
  • Periodic reporting
  • Interpret results including comparisons with national and international standards
  • Advise on air quality improvement strategies
  • Raise knowledge and awareness amongst stakeholders

Within the field of environmental permit applications

  • Provide technical guidance to new and existing tenants on the environmental permit application process
  • Review environmental permit application documentation, for example EIAs, and assesses compliance with Omani Law and international standards including IPPC, BAT, Seveso and IFC
  • Draft environmental permits
  • Follow up and monitor the permit application process with MECA

General duties

  • Support the Environmental Manager with the management of the Department’s team
  • Development of procedures, policies and process flow charts
  • Provide advice to internal clients on the allocation and repossession of port sites, development of real estate, realisation of public infrastructure and spatial planning
  • Draft reports on relevant trends and their consequences for the company
  • Project management
  • Seek new and innovative solutions
  • Raise environmental awareness
  • Proactively monitor, report and advise on overall environmental standards compliance of the industrial complex
  • Self-development in all competencies needed to achieve the job’s / Department’s objectives

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in environment or related field
  • Five years experience in the environmental field
  • Good project management skills
  • Good analytical skills
  • Knowledge of international standards and best practices such as IPPC, SEVESO, US EPA and IFC
  • Knowledge of port management
  • Fluent in written and spoken English and Arabic
